RON HORNADAY, KHI #33 MANSFIELD RACE REPORT

MANSFIELD, Ohio (May 26, 2008) – Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Camping World Chevrolet Silverado team finished 35th in Saturday’s Ohio 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park after an early-race incident forced him behind the wall for extensive repairs.

“We had a really awesome truck all weekend,” Hornaday said. “Rick (Ren, crew chief) and all those guys worked hard to get this Camping World Chevrolet Silverado running as fast as it was. I don’t know how describe it, it was just fast. Even with all the damage to the truck, it was still fast. I appreciate all the hard work that everybody put into this truck and we’ll just have to put this one behind us and get ready for Dover next week.”

Hornaday started the race from the 12th position, raced into the top-10 by lap three and was running in the fourth position by lap 20. The second caution of the race came out on lap 37 when Keven Wood spun in turn three. Hornaday took the third spot away under the caution period when he stayed out while David Starr opted to pit.

Hornaday immediately took the second spot away from Mike Skinner on the lap 43 restart. Then he chased down Johnny Benson and took the lead on lap 46, gaining five bonus points. As Hornaday passed Benson for the lead, Skinner drove around the bottom of the track and made the pass for second. On lap 47, Hornaday and Skinner battled wheel-to-wheel for the lead going down the backstretch. The two made contact going into turn three and again in turn four, which spun the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado into the outside wall before it came down across the track and backed into the inside wall.

After bringing the truck down pit road for work to repair the body, Hornaday went back out onto the track but came back in on the next lap and brought the truck behind the wall so the Camping World crew could make the necessary repairs to the severely damaged truck to get Hornaday back on the track to try to gain as many positions and points as possible.

On lap 157, Hornaday went back out and was able to gain one spot, finishing in the 35th position.

Race Chatter:

Earlier in the day, a U.S. Army veteran had given Ron a small American flag to place inside the truck. This conversation about the flag took place during the final caution period between laps 240 and 243.

Hornaday: “Whoever put this flag in here didn’t put it in the right place. It’s over here waving out the window.”
Rick Carelli (spotter): “Yeah, I noticed that. I didn’t know what it was.”
Hornaday: “It looks like we’re out here Saturday-night racing.”
Ren: “Ron, is there really a big difference in Saturday-day racing and Saturday-night racing?”
Hornaday: “Yeah, there’s a huge difference.”
